Piston and Patina

About

Photography should preserve more than appearance.

I’m Adrian B., an independent photographer based in Roermond, the Netherlands, and the person behind Piston & Patina.

I photograph collector cars, historic machinery, automotive events and the people who keep these machines alive. My work moves between carefully composed automotive photography and documentary storytelling—recording not only how a car looks, but also where it came from, who cares for it and why it still matters.

The idea behind Piston & Patina

A historic vehicle is more than an arrangement of metal, leather, wood and mechanical components.

It carries evidence of the people who designed it, built it, drove it, repaired it and preserved it. Some cars survive in immaculate condition. Others wear their history openly through faded paint, repaired panels, worn controls and surfaces shaped by decades of use.

Both deserve to be photographed with honesty.

Piston & Patina was created as a visual archive for these machines and their stories. The name represents the relationship between engineering and time: the piston as movement and mechanical purpose; the patina as memory, age and character.

A photographer’s approach

I have worked with photography for more than three decades, developing an approach built around observation, natural light, strong composition and carefully controlled shadows.

My professional experience has included sport, live events, portraiture and documentary coverage. Those environments taught me to anticipate moments, work quickly when necessary and recognise the small details that give a larger story its meaning.

With automotive photography, I bring that experience into a slower and more deliberate process.

A complete session may include the overall form of the car, exterior details, interior materials, instruments, engine components and the relationship between the vehicle and its owner. When there is a meaningful history behind the car, photographs can be accompanied by a written story based on research and conversation.

The objective is not simply to produce attractive images. It is to create a coherent photographic record with lasting value.

Documentary stories

The Stories section of Piston & Patina documents vehicles encountered at historic gatherings, workshops, private collections and other automotive settings.

These articles combine original photography with information about the vehicle, its engineering, its historical context and, whenever possible, its owner’s experience.

Research is approached carefully. Confirmed facts are separated from assumptions, and uncertainty is acknowledged when documentation is unavailable. The purpose is to preserve automotive history without turning it into mythology.

Commissioned photography

Piston & Patina is also available for private and commercial assignments.

A commissioned session can document:

  • An individual collector car
  • A private automotive collection
  • A restoration project or workshop
  • A classic-car dealer or specialist
  • An automotive gathering or driving event
  • A vehicle prepared for editorial publication
  • A personal story connecting an owner with a significant car

Assignments can range from a focused photographic session to a more complete visual story incorporating details, environmental portraits and written documentation.

Selected photographs may also be prepared as archival-quality fine-art prints, private albums or presentation pieces.

Based in Roermond

I am based in Roermond and work throughout the Netherlands, with assignments in Belgium, Germany and neighbouring regions considered depending on the project.

If you own, restore, collect or work with a vehicle that deserves to be documented properly, I would be pleased to hear its story.
